BUDGET
In the year 2004 all Parishes in the Diocese received a 6% increase in
Parish Share, for St Johns £1,851, this together with allowances
made for increases in Insurance, Heat and Lighting costs etc., gives this
year's budget. Looking to next year there is a possibility of a further
6% increase in Parish Share (£1,962). To cover this eventuality
we do need to look at raising our income.
Those who attended the April Vestry and Annual Parochial Church Meeting
will know that necessary repair work relating to the Quinquennial report
had to be carried out and there will be more in the near future.
As Church Treasurer, I feel my task is to keep the running of the Church
in Financial good order. There is money in the bank, the bills are paid
and we are not in the red. This will not be an easy year with all the
expense referred to above. The last of the reserve savings paid for the
Church Spire.
Elizabeth Blakey (Hon. Treasurer)

At the Parochial Church Council Meeting immediately afterwards the following
Officers were elected:-
Lay Chairman - Peter Haddleton
Secretary - Emma Pearson
Treasurer - Elizabeth Blakey
Planned Giving Secretary - Arthur Marshall
Deputy Churchwardens - Eric Jones and Peter Oldfield
There have been a number of changes in the Parochial Church Council with
the departure of Sean and Krystyna Primrose together with Lorna Carter.
Sean has worked diligently as Secretary to the PCC and we are sorry to
lose him as is the case with Lorna Carter who was our Electoral Roll Officer.
We are extremely grateful for the work that they have put in whilst in
office. Whilst we are sad that Krystyna has left the PCC we are assured
that her work with the crèche will continue undaunted. Krystyna,
with the assistance of her little band of helpers, has done a marvellous
job of running the crèche and we are also grateful for her monthly
contribution to the magazine.
Our thanks are due to Emma Pearson and Peter Oldfield who have kindly
volunteered to take over as Secretary and Electoral Roll Officer respectively.
Peter Oldfield has also joined Eric Jones as a Deputy Churchwarden.
Our thanks go to Elizabeth Blakey for all her efforts in managing the
finances during what has proved to be a demanding year. We are pleased
that she agreed to return as a Churchwarden during the year. Eric Jones
has proved to be of invaluable help as Deputy Churchwarden and we are
grateful for his assistance. Arthur Marshall continues to do an excellent
job in his role as Planned Giving Secretary and it is reassuring to know
that one can always turn to him for help and advice.
The Church would not function effectively were it not for all the persons
who volunteer their services. We are very grateful to everyone who attends
regularly to clean the church, arrange the flowers, tend the gardens,
ring the bells, sing in the choir and organise social events. Worthy of
particular mention is Margaret Aspinall who raises considerable sums of
money for the church with her "Smartie Tube Appeal". Davina
Hawkyard is present at virtually every service providing help and assistance
to the Vicar. We are fortunate in having Colin Briggs as Organist and
Choirmaster ably assisted by John Hewitt who plays at Evensong. Colin
does a splendid job of organising the church music and has also been responsible
for putting on concerts in church along with our "home grown"
music group. Sadly, whilst these Sunday evening concerts have been excellent
there has been a dearth of support and we draw the conclusion that people
just do not wish to turn out on a Sunday Evening. Hopefully Colin and
the Group may be persuaded to perform at one of our forthcoming
"Get Togethers".
Colin, our Vicar, upon his appointment two and a half years ago, could
never have envisaged the problems that he was going to face at St. John's.
Supported by Jan and the family he continues to do an excellent job and
we are very fortunate to have him as our vicar despite the fact that he
seems to have a jinx over his microphone in church. Reverend Kathryn Fitzsimons
who is the Urban Ministry Officer for the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds,
and resides in the parish, provides valuable assistance to Colin at services
and is a talented member of the music group.
