Church Organisations/Groups

Here at St John's we have a number of Church organisations and Groups :-

Women's Fellowship (Now unfortunately Closed)
St John's Women's Fellowship meets at 2pm in the Parochial Hall, Fitzroy Drive on the 2nd Thursday of each month. These meetings are always very interesting - have a look at details of previous meetings

The Parish has a Brownie and Guide Unit that meet at Roundhay Methodist Church. Both meet on Thursday term time evenings- except the first and last of the term!

Every year we try to camp at least one weekend, and one week away.

In the last 10 years, we have camped at Kielder - Northumberland, Barnsley, Sheffield, Lincoln, Wike, Bramhope, Hexham, Burley Woodhead to name but a few in England.

We have been on two holidays to Switzerland, canoeing in the Ardeche, and camping in Calais area with a trip to Eurodisney!

Unfortunately St John's does not have a Rainbow Unit or any Beaver, Cub or Scout Units. The nearest in this area are at Roundhay Methodist Church (see a link to their website on the links page).

Choir
Led by choir master and organist Colin Briggs, the choir provide a fitting accompanyment to the lovely surroundings of the Chancel. The choir perform special pieces at almost every service, and at some services like the 9 Lessons & Carols or the Service of Light, show an extensive repertoire. Although the choir have a comfortable number of members, they could always do with more - for details contact Colin (Tel 2578120).

Bellringers
St John's Church has 3 bells - all hung for full circle ringing. Although we do not currently have a practice night, we ring the bells on Sunday morning from 9.30am - come along and find out more or contact Raymond Horne (Tel 2656628). If we get new members, practices will be arranged to suit. As well as the more difficult full circle ringing, the bells at St John's can also be chimed - this is much easier and can be picked up in one session.

Sick Visiting
Recently the sick visiting aspect of our work has been revised. This is not only a valuable service, it is a clear example of what we, as Christians, should be doing to help the wider community outside the church. St John's strength lies not in preaching evangelism on street corners but by quiet, dedicated work, for the benefit of others. If anyone else is interested in helping with this work, or knows someone who needs visiting, please contact Elizabeth Blakey.

House Group
Meeting about twice a month (other than during holidays), the group have been following the Emmaus course. We currently have 8 members but are keen to have more. For details contact Peter Oldfield (Tel 2738930).

Flower Arranging
Everyone who enters St John's is impressed by the quality of the flower arranging. They meet every Thursday at church to arrange the flowers for the next Sunday. If there is anyone out there who can do flower arranging, or is interested in learning, could they please contact Margaret Jackson through the Vicar or Wardens. If anyone is interested in donating the cost of flowers for a particular Sunday, please contact Mrs Pam Withey.

Cleaning Team
If ever there was an unsung body of people - this is it. If the church wasn't tidy and clean, we would soon notice, yet because it is seems to draw no comment!. The cleaners meet on Saturday morning (although arrangements can be made for helpers to come when they can) and could do with more people to help. If you can spare even half an hour, contact Jean Lawson through the Vicar or Wardens.

Gardening Team
Do you like being outdoors, getting dirty, cold and wet. If so, then we can accomadate, however most of the gardening gets done in the warmer months and if you want your own 'patch' to tend, please contact the Wardens.

Fund Raising Committee
Since the Fund Raising Committee was formed in 2000, there have been a number of special events - like the concert given in Church by Leeds College of Music or the Barn Dance in the Parochial Hall. Existing events have also been given a makeover - like the Christmas Fayre. If you have any good ideas or can help with organising events, please contact the Wardens.

PCC
The Parochial Church Council is a body elected people who effectively 'manage' the Church. There are about 18 members currently and elections are held at the Annual Vestry Meeting at Easter every year.

Some of our congregation also represent St John's on other groups away from St John's :-

Ecumenical Committee - a body made up of people from both Roundhay St John's and Roundhay Methodist Church. This committee decide on joint events to be held between the 2 churches. There is a Covenant that exists between St John's and Roundhay Methodist Church which was last signed on the occasion of the Licensing of Colin Cheeseman as Priest-in-charge of St John's in September 2001.

Deanery/Diocesan Synod - there are 2 bodies that represent the local (Deanery) and wider (Diocesan) church. For anyone interested this is a fantastic opportunity to be a part of the forming the policy under which the church operates. St John's has representatives on both bodies. Elections are held every Easter at the Annual Vestry Meeting.

St John's School - The local junior school is affiliated to St John's. A number of the congregation either work at the school or help in various capacities - Governors, PTA etc. For further details about the school - see their webpage on this site.
