Primary School

Our Mission Statement
(extract)

St John's seeks to be a secure and welcoming community of chirlden and adults rooted in the Christian gospel, in which each person is valued regardless of creed, colour and sex.

It is from this secure base that the school aims to enable children to realise their full potential by providing a curriculum which allows each individual child to develop physically, mentally and spiritually. The school understands itself to be an integral part of the local community and parish and seeks to work in partnership
with both.

Curriculum

All children work towards the Early Learning Goals in the Foundation Stage and follw the National Curriculum from year 1.

The National Literacy Strategy and the National Numeracy Strategy are followed from Reception to year 6.

The school provides a broad and balanced curriculum which enables the pupils to increase their knowledge and develop a wide range of skills and abilities.

Ofsted

The school was most recently inspected in November 1999. The following are extracts from the summary report.

Extra-Curricular Activities

The school provides a range of additional activities for the children. Some are led by school staff and some by visiting experts. Although activities may vary from year to year, in the last year they have included the following: playing the recorder, violin and brass instruments, football, basketball, cross country. There is a charge for some of the activities. The school has competed with other schools in football, rugby, netball, cross country and rounders. There are a range of visits to places beyond the school as part of the curriculum and year 6 children take in a residential visit.

Nursery

We have a thriving 26 place Nursery attached to the school. Whilst a place in Nursery does not automatically secure a place in main school, most children in main school have come through our Nursery. There is very close liaison between the Nursery and the Reception class both in planning and staffing.

Children in Nursery attend 5 sessions a week, either 5 mornings or 5 afternoons. The Nursery has well resourced learning areas both inside and outside.

Our Nursery is recognised as the centre of good practice within the authority who often use it as an examplar for visitors.

In line with all local authority nurseries, children anter our Nursery after their third birthday. The only entry criteria is one of age.

P.T.A

The school has an active PTA which holds regular events of both a social and fund raising nature. In the recent past the PTA has provided the school with many additional resources including sports team strip, a sound system and 4 PCs. All parents of children in the school are members of the PTA.

Entry into School

As a Church of England Aided school, the Governors control admissions into main school. Parents are invited to obtain an application form from the school office for completion. In the event of there being competition for places, governors will award each application points for each of the following criteria: proximity of the child's home to school, religious affiliation and family links with the school.

Charities

Each term the school supports a recognised charity through a variety of events. charities recently supported include NCH Action for Children, Childline, NSPCC, Action Aid child sponsorship, Tusk Trust as African conservation charity and Blue Peter Appeals.
